What Is Viscose from Bamboo, Actually?

The viscose process starts by chipping bamboo into pulp, then dissolving that pulp in sodium hydroxide (lye, essentially). For factory-level sustainability (chemical waste management, working conditions, emissions), you need the separate OEKO-TEX STeP certification. Standard 100 tests the sock. STeP evaluates the building the sock was made in. They are complementary, not interchangeable.
FSC Certification: What the Forest Label Does (and Doesn't) Follow
The Forest Stewardship Council was established in 1994 to certify responsible management of forests and cultivated plantations. Bamboo qualifies under both categories, which makes sense given that bamboo is technically a grass that grows in forests and is cultivated on plantations. Nature is weird.
FSC offers two certification types that matter here. Forest Management certification covers how the bamboo is grown: biodiversity protection, soil health, water management, community rights. Chain of Custody certification tracks the certified material from the forest through every processing step to the finished garment.
